No, not if im using a proper leather. Some leather can be too soft And cause edge rounding even with lighter pressure. With a very tight grain leather thats not as much of an issue. A quality abrasive also helps. The idea is to let the abrasive do the work. The leather is just a carrier. For me a good feel is what i want. I just dont get that with mdf. Balsa is better in that regard but it doesnt last long. Just my two cents🙂
I just cut a 1.5” Wide block of red oaK end grain and loaded it up with chromium oxide. Very hard surface feel but it works really well, no chance of round over. When I need a fresh surface I’ll just skim cut it in the table saw.
Ive tried mdf and it works. I just dont like the feel of it. Its like stropping on a rock. I know some people like it its just not for me.🙂
